Özet

The eastern extension of the Karamadazı iron skarn system was investigated through detailed geological mapping and field observations to evaluate the continuity of skarn mineralization and its host lithologies. The study area, located east of the well-known Karamadazı Fe-skarn deposit near Yahyalı (Kayseri, Central Türkiye), is characterized by intrusive rocks belonging to the Karamadazı granitoid and an overlying carbonate sequence that has undergone extensive contact metamorphism and metasomatism. The intrusive suite is dominated by porphyritic granodiorite and is locally represented by granite and hydrothermally altered tonalite. The carbonate succession consists predominantly of marbleized limestones with subordinate calc-schist horizons and is unconformably overlain by a thin basaltic volcanic cover. Field observations reveal a well-developed skarn zone along the granitoid–carbonate contact. Prograde skarn assemblages are represented mainly by garnet and epidote, whereas widespread oxidation zones indicate intense supergene alteration. Magnetite constitutes the dominant ore mineral and occurs as massive to semi-massive bodies accompanied by hematite, limonite, chalcopyrite and pyrite. The ore-bearing zones are spatially associated with intense hydrothermal alteration, pervasive fracturing and iron oxide enrichment. Extensive limonitization and hematitization observed at the surface suggest prolonged oxidation of primary sulphide-bearing assemblages. The observed lithological relationships, alteration characteristics and ore mineral assemblages are consistent with the genetic framework previously proposed for the Karamadazı Fe-skarn system, while new field evidence indicates that economically significant skarn mineralization extends farther east than previously documented. These preliminary observations demonstrate that the eastern sector of the Karamadazı system represents a promising target for detailed petrographic, mineral chemical, whole-rock geochemical and geochronological investigations aimed at constraining the evolution of the magmatic-hydrothermal system and its metallogenic significance.
