Social studies teacher candidates' perceptions about media literacy

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine the social studies teacher candidates' perceptions about media literacy by using a survey method. A semi-structured interview was conducted with 30 social studies teacher candidates who were senior class students in 2010-2011 academic year at Erciyes University, Social Studies Teaching Program and the data was analyzed by using descriptive analysis technique. Questions were prepared based on "5 key questions and 5 main concepts" proposed by the Center for Media Literacy. According to the study findings, the teacher candidates are unaware of some subjects which are a main requirement for critical standpoint concerning media literacy concepts.
