P. atlantica, Desf. has been used as a rootstock for P. vera in Turkey and other pistachio growing countries for many centuries. It is found in natural forests in many parts of Turkey. Its trees are dioecious so each of the nuts has heterozygous character. All P. atlantica trees do not have the same growth characteristics as well. Therefore, Turkey has a big population for selection of good P. atlantica rootstocks. The aim of this investigation was to select the types with the best growing characteristics and determine their morphological properties. Selection was carried out in the Adana, Aydin and Manisa provinces. Altogether 45 types were selected (6 from Adana, 20 from Aydin, 19 from Manisa). The seed weights ranged between 18.8 g/100 nuts (in 09-A-18) and 8.0 g/100 seeds (in 45-A-16) The germination percentages ranged between 95% (in 09-A-14 and 45-A-15) and 18% (in 01-A-01). The germination rates (days to reach 50% germination percentage) ranged between 23 days (in 09-A-07) and 107.4 days (in 09-A-17). The fastest growth in stem diameter (4.84 mm) and stem height (33.2 cm) was found in type 09-A-07.
