Özet

This study was conducted to determine the risk of constipation and influencing factors in patients admitted to the neurology intensive care unit (ICU). Conducted as a descriptive and cross-sectional study, the data collection tools used were the “Personal Information Form, Constipation Severity Scale (CSS), and Constipation Risk Assessment Scale (CRAS).” The study sample comprised patients hospitalized in the Neurology ICU between June 2018 and June 2019 who met the inclusion criteria and agreed to participate. During this period, 320 patients were hospitalized, and the study was completed with 102 patients who met the study criteria and agreed to participate. The study found that 60.8% of patients were in the low-risk group for constipation. The total score of the CSS and its subscales, as well as the total score of the CRAS, were statistically significantly higher in female than in male. A positive, weak, and statistically significant relationship was found between patients' CRAS scores and CSS total scores (p<0.05). The study concluded that constipation severity and risk were higher in female than in male.
