Özet

Design competitions reflect international developments in architectural disciplines and highlight current trends in global architectural education. Archiprix International is an international student design competition where architecture, urbanism, and landscape architecture schools submit graduation projects. It serves as a platform to observe and evaluate contemporary global approaches. This study aims to reveal contemporary design approaches in new building designs within historical contexts and offer an international perspective. Eleven graduation projects from Archiprix International 2021, focusing on new buildings in historical environments, were analyzed based on students’ own statements. Discourse analysis examined how students approached the design problem, how they interpreted it, and what ideas influenced their work. The findings show that modern design approaches emphasize the importance of historical texture and preservation. Key themes include addressing social issues through architecture, creating a dialogue between old and new, embracing technological innovation, sustainability, and combining contrasts and continuity over time. The projects reflect similarities and differences with historical textures through elements such as form, color, light and shadow, material, proportion, scale, and spatial systems. The study underlines how design competitions serve as creative and multidimensional learning environments in architectural education, fostering a rich exchange of ideas and contemporary design thinking.
