In this study, the physical and mechanical properties of rocks which are connected with their mineralogical and textural characteristics and the affecting of changing mineralogical and textural features of sandstones properties in the industrial usage were investigated. The purpose of this study is to determine the usability of Salbas (Adana) sandstones as natural stone or sand in industry, according to Turkish Standards (TS) and to investigate the relationships among petrographical, physical and mechanical properties of the sandstones. Geological, physical, chemical, petrographical and mechanical properties of the Salbas sandstones were determined. Mechanical properties were investigated on samples taken vertical, diagonal and horizontal to the bedding planes of the sandstones. In addition, changes of mineral grains shape and form in the sound and broken sandstone samples applying different load conditions for each direction was examined using polarise microscope. The study showed that there exists a linear correlation between uniaxial compressive strength and mechanical properties of rock samples and that anisotropy has an important effect on the mechanical properties of the sandstones.
