Residential
areas in the world are tending to spread in general. There are many reasons for
that rising such as their locations, physiographic units, closeness to a city
or to trade areas, environmental conditions, urbanization plans, and
agricultural politics. Each of these factors can affect the spread or stability
of urban areas at different powers. For example; if there is the main trade
port around a city, this city is under very powerful pressure by that
transportation port. It means that city probably will spread too much in the
future. On the other hand, if the agricultural policies of the relevant
institutions are aimed at the protection and development of agricultural lands,
this time there will be more stagnation in settlements. There is both commercial
and agricultural pressure due to the location of the Kazanlı District in the
study area. The
Kazanlı is centered in the study area and it is only 1 km from the sea in the
north direction. Agricultural uses (greenhouses, citrus garden and others) are
predominant in this region. Secondly, there are residential use and finally
small and large scale factories. The Kazanlı settlement occupied 6 ha and 292
ha in 1948 and 2020, respectively. Any factory use has not been identified in
the study area in 1948. While the area covered by Kazanlı settlement in the
study area was approximately 0.22% in 1948, this rate was 10.62% in 2020. The
results show that the total increase of Kazanlı district (both settlement and
factories use) in the study area is 10.40% in 72 years. The biggest reasons for
this increase seem to be the proximity of Kazanlı district to Mersin, which has
a high commercial potential (port, main highway). On the other hand, it is
predicted that the factor that stops the increase in these settlements in 72
years is intensive agricultural (mostly greenhouse) uses around Kazanlı
district. In this study, it has been observed that the contribution of both
aerial photographs and satellite data within the framework of remote sensing
methods is very important in detecting such changes in land use over the years.
