Abstract

Experiments are performed concerning backwater at bridge constrictions placed in a compound-channel flume with both normal and skewed crossings. The flume had smooth or rough main channel and flood plains. Five different types of bridge models were used in the experiments, and two different skew angles (phi = 30 degrees and phi = 45 degrees) were tested for each type of bridge compared with that for a normal crossing (phi = 0 degrees). A new design chart is proposed yielding a quadratic equation for estimating backwater.
