Özet

Background: Although the concepts of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex (LGBTI) do not pose any genetic or biological danger, these individuals are subject to negative attitudes. Negative attitudes toward LGBTI individuals result in inadequate services for these individuals in many areas, including the healthcare system. Nurses are among the professionals who frequently provide services to individuals with different sexual orientations in society and are a group that should have a high level of awareness in this regard. Objectives: This study aims to determine the predictors of nursing students’ attitudes toward individuals with different orientations. Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted between November and December 2023 with 644 nursing students studying at the Faculty of Health Sciences of a university in the Mediterranean Region. Data were collected using the “Personal Survey Form” and the “Attitude Scale Towards LGBTI (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex) Individuals”. The data obtained were evaluated using methods such as frequency, percentage, arithmetic mean, standard deviation, dummy variable, and linear regression analysis. Results: The mean age of the students who participated in the study was 20.56 ± 2.05, 79.3% were female, 79.7% had heterosexual sexual orientation, 81.7% had the Mediterranean region as their longest settlement and 40.1% stated that being an LGBTI individual was a matter of personal preference. It was determined that the mean total score of the scale was 2.32±0.97 and the students had a positive attitude towards LGBTI individuals. According to the model established in the study; sexual orientation, having LGBTI friends, willingness to care for LGBTI individuals and views on what LGBTI is are important variables in determining LGBTI attitudes of female students. Male students’ views on having LGBTI friends, economic level, willingness to care for LGBTI individuals and what LGBTI is also determine their LGBTI attitudes (p0.005). Conclusion: It It has been determined that nursing students generally have positive attitudes toward LGBT individuals; however, male students have been found to exhibit more negative attitudes than female students. In this regard, integrating topics that raise awareness of LGBTI individuals into the nursing education curriculum may contribute to the development of a more inclusive and sensitive perspective among all students. It is recommended that studies be conducted that include more diverse sample groups, involve different health professionals with a multidisciplinary approach, and evaluate the impact of the education provided to students on their attitudes toward LGBTI individuals.
