Using pre-existing poetry in understanding women exposed to intimate partner violence

Özet

The aim of this study was to examine whether Ozge Sonmez's poem “It is Getting Old to Wait” can be used to understand women who are exposed to intimate partner violence (IPV). The study group consisted of 16 women. We asked the participants to read Sonmez's poem “It is Getting Old to Wait” and write about their IPV experiences. The women who participated in the study voluntarily sent the documents they created to us by e-mail. In addition, data obtained from follow-up interviews conducted with them over the phone was also recorded in the documents they created. Two researchers independently examined the documents created by the women and determined the codes. As a result, eight themes emerged. The results showed that Sonmez's poetry helped us to examine the participants’ experiences in depth. According to the literature, we discussed the research results and made suggestions to researchers and practitioners.
