Abstract

Turkey is the most important gene center of naturally grown Rosaceae family of hawthorn (Crataegus spp.) species. Hawthorn grows naturally in mountainous areas, bushes and rocks in our country and no cultural process is applied to these natural plants. Hawthorn contains many substances such as flavonoids, vitamins and organic acids that are beneficial for human health in fruit and flowers. In the present study the effect of different BAP (6- benzylaminopurine) concentrations in in vitro propagation of four hawthorn genotypes (40-1, 50-1, 37-1 and 37-2) obtained from Apricot Research Institute Hawthorn Genetic Resource Collection were investigated. MS (Murashige and Skoog) medium supplemented with different concentrations of BAP (0.0. 0.5. 1.0. 1.5 and 2.0 mg/l) were used for in vitro propagation of four hawthorn genotypes. All of the experiments established for micropropagation of hawthorn plants were set up in randomized plots in a factorial design with 3 replications. Shoot height (cm) and micropropagation rate were examined. The highest of plant height was achieved in medium supplemented with 1 mg/l BAP for 40-1, 37-1 and 37-2 genotype, 0.5 mg/l BA for 50-1 genotype. The highest of micropropagation rate was achieved for 40-1, 50-1, 37-1 and 37-2 genotypes in medium supplemented with 1.5 mg/l BAP, 0.5 mg/l BAP, 1 mg/l BAP and 1 mg/l BAP respectively.
