In this chapter, cultural symbols representing various nations, which appear in digital games—one of the prominent forms of entertainment in the 21st century—will be examined. The analysis will explore the impact of these graphic forms within the game universe on both the gameplay and the narrative, supported by examples. The case study will focus on Euro Truck Simulator 2 (ETS2), a truck-driving simulation game. This game allows players to transport cargo from one city to another and earn money, while also offering a wide range of customization options for the trucks they drive. Players can modify numerous features, from roof lights to engine upgrades, and from bull bars to rims. Additionally, they have the option to change the colors and patterns of the truck’s exterior. Among the available paint jobs are designs that incorporate cultural symbols from various countries. In this book chapter, the influence of cultural symbols in digital games on gameplay and narrative will be examined through the example of culturally themed truck exterior customizations in ETS2. In doing so, the opportunities for cultural representation available to the player within the virtual world of the game will be illustrated through various types of graphic cultural symbols featured in the selected game.
