This research has two steps. In the first step during 1995-1999, research studies on the breeding of early cultivars adapted for subtropical conditions and late cultivars for highland areas were carried out. 8991 flowers were pollinated both in Pozanti (highlands) and in Adana (subtropics). The obtained seedlings were planted in Adana to obtain high growing performance and early fruiting. This paper contains the results of the late cultivar studies. One of the main aims of this research was to improve the quality characteristics of 'Ustun' local very late peach cultivar by cross breeding with 'J.H. Hale', 'Monroe' and 'Rio-Oso-Gem'. In addition, the seedlings coming from open pollination between them and 'Suncrest' peach cultivar were obtained.
In the second step of this research, the best considered twenty seedlings were selected and planted in Pozanti Research and Application Center in 2000. Plant characteristics were evaluated under highland conditions.
As the results of nine years' studies in Pozanti, six seedlings were selected and going to be patented this year. These elite cultivar selection codes are: RU-19, RU-24, UR-1, J-92, J-28 and S-6.
