Abstract

Turkey has 22.3 million ha. forest area cover is about 28.6% of Turkey of which about half of the area (9.6 million ha) is unproductive. Forest establishment is the most important way in conversion of unproductive forest to productive. However, it is known seedling morphology and quality is one of the most important factors in success of forest establishment. This study was carried out on 1+0 year bare root seedlings originated from a seed stand and a seed orchard of Brutian Pine (Pinus brutia Ten.) at Dursunbey Forest Nursery to contribute forest establishment practices of the species. Seedling height and root-collar diameter were examined on 150 seedlings chosen randomly in each seed sources at the end of 2017. Averages of height and diameter were 11.5 cm and 2.61 mm in orchard seedlings, while they were 12.2 cm and 2.64 mm in stand seedlings, respectively. Significant difference (p<0.05) between seed sources for height was found while they were similar (p>0.05) for diameter. 12% for diameter and 49% for height of stand seedlings were cull/unsuitable for plantation, while they were 38% and 11% of orchard seedlings according to classes of Turkish Standard Institute.
