Özet

Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus L.) is a warm-season crop, naturally with 2n = 22 chromosomes. Nowadays, in vitro anther and ovary culture tools for haploid production are popular among scholars as an up-to-date technique to enhance commercial crops, particularly watermelon for quality, and to attain consumers’ demands. Thus, in watermelon, in vitro androgenesis and gynogenesis through anther and ovary cultures are essential techniques for inducing haploid plants for speeding up breeding programs. This review highlights the current situation of in vitro ovary and anther cultures implementation in watermelon for haploid induction. The development of haploidization technology for producing pure homozygous plants has a pivotal influence on agricultural systems, as well as breeding studies. Most research studies reported that the genotype of donor plants, plant growth regulators, and culture conditions are key factors for in vitro anther and ovary cultures. Further research is required to generate and develop the substantial protocols to enhance haploid plants in watermelon for its production as well as for quantity and quality. According to biotechnological methods, haploid induction techniques in watermelons seem to be a successful method for elaborating 100% homozygous lines at an efficient cost within a short period of time.
