GENETIC RESOURCES AND CROP EVOLUTION, cilt.69, sa.6, ss.2047-2065, 2022 (SCI-Expanded)
Mango (Mangifera indica L.) is an important fruit crop throughout the world. Consequently, due to its excellent nutritional value and delicious taste, it is admired as the "king of fruits" particularly in tropical regions around the world. Pakistan is agro-ecologically diverse and feasible for the cultivation of subtropical and tropical fruits. Mango is officially declared as the "National Fruit of Pakistan" due to its socio-economic importance. Despite this potential, it is vulnerable to multiple kinds of pertinent constraints like phytopathogens virulence, lack of integrated pest management (IPM) practices, abiotic stresses, biotic stresses and post-harvest losses which ultimately lead to an immense economic loss. Therefore to counter these challenges, various advanced biotechnological tools could be advantageous to improve the mango germplasm by genetic characterization, fruits defense monitoring mechanism in response to various fungal pathogens and validating the candidate genes responsible for disease identification. The prime objective of the current review is to assess the results of the recently reported data in compliance with the constraints that limit mango production by incorporating the combination of omics and biotechnological approaches. Additionally, this review article gives thorough knowledge to the scientific readers, mango researchers and growers about implementing the latest omics-biotechnological approaches for the improved mango fruit germplasm in Pakistan and at a global level.
