The problem of the distribution of containers by ships and keeping the inventory levels within specified bounds at ports in a marine system is called the maritime inventory routing problem. The problem has been studied by both academics and practitioners. However, there are insufficient studies concerning environmental issues and ship compartment capacities. In this study, an extensive literature survey focusing on these issues is summarized and analyzed and the gaps in the field are identified. Besides, future trends, opportunities, and suggestions are presented.
