Turkey has favorable ecological conditions, especially the Aegean, Mediterranean and Southeastern Regions, for almond production. Domestic cultivars in Turkey are hard-shell almond types and they are self-incompatible. For this reason, all the young certificated almond plants are produced from foreign cultivars as domestic cultivars are unable to attract attention in the market. The objective of this study is to breed late flowering and self-compatible almond cultivars by crossing some local cultivars with self-compatible foreign ones. Self-compatible 'Lauranne', 'Guara' and 'Moncayo' cultivars were crossed with self-incompatible 'Gulcan 1', 'Gulcan 2', 'Akbadem' and 'Nurlu' cultivars in 2009. After the crosses, 6,116 seeds and 4,082 F-1 seedlings (average germination 66.7%) were obtained; 1,743 self-compatible seedlings have been determined by S-allele specific PCR analysis. The self-compatible F1 plants were planted at a spacing of 2x1 m at the Pistachio Research Institute in Gaziantep in the winter of 2011. Several characters such as leafing date, seedling vigor, growth habit and branching have been observed during 2011. Bloom date, early bearing and nut traits will be assessed during the subsequent years.
