Özet

In aquaculture, the control of infectious disease and the maintenance of fish health are addressedthrough both therapeutic and preventive approaches. Because antimicrobial use can lead toresistance and to residue accumulation in farmed fish, probiotics and, more recently, postbioticsform an expanding area of aquaculture research that addresses growth performance, intestinalhistology, microbiota composition and immune-related gene expression in fish. Zebrafish are

inexpensive to maintain, develop rapidly and have a short generation time, and germ-free andgnotobiotic conditions can be used to examine host–microbiota interactions. This reviewexamines the use of zebrafish (Danio rerio) as a model organism for investigating the

mechanistic responses to probiotics and postbiotics, covering immune and inflammatoryregulation, oxidative stress and antioxidant defence, intestinal barrier integrity andhistomorphology, gut microbiota composition, pathogen resistance, growth and reproduction. The extent to which findings obtained in zebrafish can be applied to aquaculture species is alsodiscussed, in view of the differences reported between zebrafish and farmed fish and between

laboratory and farm conditions. Further studies are needed to characterise dose–response

relationships, compare live and inactivated forms of the same strain, and examine pathogensother than the Aeromonas species used in most challenge studies to date. The potential use of

preparations that give consistent responses in zebrafish could then be assessed in target farmed

species.
