Lymphedema is characterized by generalized or regional accumulation of protein-rich interstitial fluid that occurs as a consequence of congenital or acquired disruption of lymphatic circulation. Cancer-related lymphedema is the most common cause of secondary upper and lower extremity lymphedema.
