Özet
This chapter focuses on the field of English as a foreign language (EFL) education as a global collaboration between Türkiye, Indonesia, and Chile during October–November 2025. Data was examined from the reflections and insights of pre-service EFL teachers regarding the impact of virtual exchange (VE) participation on their professional development, and English language proficiency. The study involved 128 pre-service EFL teachers from Türkiye, Indonesia, and Chile. A convergent mixed-methods design was utilized, incorporating a questionnaire with both closed-ended (yes/no and five-point Likert scale) and open-ended questions administered at the conclusion of the 8-week experience. Using a sociocultural and social constructivist perspective, findings revealed that participation in the VE significantly heightened pre-service teachers’ interest in their discipline and enhanced their motivation to learn English. Participants noted improvements in their reading and writing skills as well as their overall intercultural competence. Furthermore, pre-service teachers expressed a strong belief that effective twenty-first-century EFL educators must possess both disciplinary-specific skills and the intercultural competences. These results underscore the advantages of integrating EFL teacher education with global collaborations through VE and suggest that English Language Teaching as a discipline could benefit further by embedding these types of experience for the learners.
