Özet
Food packaging is undergoing a profound transformation, in response to increasing demands for food safety, supply-chain transparency, waste reduction, and sustainability, driven by the convergence of advanced materials, digitalization, and Industry 4.0 technologies. This chapter explores the emerging concept of Food Packaging 4.0, which redefines the packaging role from a passive protective barrier into an intelligent, connected, and sustainability-oriented system. Building on developments in artificial intelligence, big data analytics, the Internet of Things, smart sensors, robotics, blockchain, additive manufacturing, nanotechnology, immersive technologies, and digital twins, Food Packaging 4.0 enables real-time quality monitoring, predictive shelf-life assessment, enhanced traceability, and improved consumer engagement. The chapter provides a critical overview of key enabling technologies and illustrates their practical applications in smart, active, and intelligent packaging systems, highlighting recent scientific and industrial advances that contribute to food safety, quality assurance, waste reduction, and circular economy goals. Finally, it discusses current limitations, including material safety, data interoperability, regulatory challenges, and scalability, and outlines future research directions needed to support the safe, resilient, and sustainable deployment of Food Packaging 4.0 across global food systems.
