This chapter provides a general overview of printed circuit board assembly technology (PCBA), because without knowing the state of PCBA technology, describing and overcoming problems would be difficult. It describes the most common types of PCBs, electronic components, and electronic assembly-related processes and techniques. The assembling of PCBs is a complicated and defect-prone process because it often involves a multitude of component parts and a series of interdependent and sometimes repetitive assembly processes. Printed circuit boards may be classified into two basic categories based on the way they are manufactured: graphical and discrete-wire interconnection boards. A computer integrated rework cell was specifically designed to study the generic problems associated with the removal, replacement, and fastening of pre- and post-soldered surface mount (SM) and through-hole components. SM components can be classified into two parts: passive components and active components.
