This study aims to examine the understanding of the qiraats (the variant readings of Qur'an) within the frame of linguistic commentaries in the early period. In those commentaries, two different aproaches to the qiraat attract the attention. The first aproach regards the giraats as a practice area and accepts qiraats as they are, as a legacy of tradition. The second aproach treats the qiraats as a matter can be analyzed with scientific point of view, and doesn't avoid from criticizing or preferring the qiraats according to scientific criteria if it needs. The study examines the understanding the style of qiraat in those commentaries under two major topics. In the first chapter, the fact of transfer (nakl) causing to be perceived as traditional topics is examined on the basis of narrating (riwayah) and manuscript of Qur'an (Mushaf), and be dwelled on the fact of ijma representing consensus about the qiraats. Also, some cases pointing to the roles of readers (qari) and narrators (rawi) in transferring qiraat are examined in this chapter. The second section focuses on the considerations originated from linguistics and commentary which refer that the qiraats are perveived as scientific matters. The study is completed with result section.
