Generative
artificial intelligence tools based on large language models are being used
across various professional domains, as well as by different age groups for a
range of purposes. Young individuals, in particular, are able to utilize these
tools effectively within their academic education processes. According to the
existing literature, students employ AI tools to complete assignments, generate
summaries to better comprehend lengthy texts, perform translations, engage in
casual conversations during their free time, and create visuals based on
various topics. However, integrating AI-mediated outputs into
professional and academic settings raises specific ethical concerns. To date,
there are generally no clear regulations that define or restrict how and for
what purposes generative AI models should be used. The scope and intent of
usage in this domain are typically shaped by individuals' ethical
frameworks and the boundaries defined within their professional
environments.
This study
explores the motivations behind the use of generative AI among
communication students enrolled in a faculty of communication. Through in-depth
and semi-structured interviews, the research investigates the original
perspectives of higher education students on this topic. Within a qualitatively
constructed framework, the study examines the students’ reasons for using
generative AI tools, the areas in which they benefit from such tools, and the
formation of their ethical approaches during usage. The findings of
this research are expected to offer a novel contribution to the existing
literature on the ethical use of generative AI tools.
