Özet

Previously, animal selection was based on superior phenotypes. In recent years, the emergenceof molecular markers has allowed the easy selection of many valuable traits directly. Molecular markers have played an essential role in animal husbandry and genetics by providing opportunities to maximize selection, especially for low genetic susceptibility or traits in which phenotypic measurement is difficult, expensive, or only possible in late life. Various types of molecular markers, such as restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs), short stranded repeats (SSRs), and single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), have been widely used in genetic optimization. It can be easily amplified using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to estimate the genetic diversity within or between breeding populations. These markers can be used simply as reference points in transgenic breeding to identify animals with transgenes or to identify genes genomic regions that influence economic traits through marker-assisted selection. Hence, the overall improvement in livestock species is greatly assisted by the use of molecular markers.
