Urban Structure of the Eastern Mediterranean Port City in Nineteenth Century
The Mediterranean attracted researchers as a field of study due to its existence as the material space of reciprocal and regen- erative relationships between human beings, their culture and nature, land and sea. The port cities in the Eastern Mediter- ranean region had been mostly discussed in relation to their economic relationships, owing to their geographic location, and to globalization processes. In this study, the spatial structure of the Eastern Mediterranean port cities in the nineteenth cen- tury is discussed. Accordingly hereby, the shaping of the urban structure of the Eastern Mediterranean port cities is discussed in the study with reference to the components of urban struc- ture throughout different examples. Since most of the previous studies on Mediterranean port cities focus on their economical and social aspects, this study aims to contribute to these studies with a spatial perspective.
