Özet

Asthma is a chronic, obstructive and inflammatory airway disease which may usually be reversible either spontaneously or following an appropriate therapy. It is one of the most common childhood diseases responsible for a significant lost of school days and for a low quality life. The goal of the asthma treatment is to achieve no or minimal asthma symptoms and to prevent from development of new asthma attacks. Appropriate dose prescription education at inhalation techniques and preventive environmental measures are necessary for obtaining a good control. Most asthmatic children need to two types of medicine; first is controller medicine such as inhaled steroid, montelukast etc which should be taken everyday over a long period. The second one is reliever medication (short acting beta agonist) which should be used as needed (when asthma symptoms occured). It is also important to develop patient-doctor partnership for improving the asthma control. Clinicians are responsible for reducing risk factors, treatment and monitoring of asthma. Asthma should be treated in stepwise manner to achieve and maintain the control of the disease. Drugs are increased step up or decreased gradually step down in according to the control level of asthma. Additionally, the clinician should make an appropriate evaluation and treatment for comorbid diseases such as allergic rhinitis, rhinosinusitis, serous otitis and gastroosefageal reflux.
