Along with the rapid developments in defense technologies, it has also brought diversity as well as speed up
ballistic protection studies. Armor steels, which are the most preferred material in vehicle armoring, are still widely used
in defense technology, especially in armored combat vehicles, due to their homogeneous microstructure in order to resist
situations such as breakage, puncture, and particle formation caused by ammunition. In this study, ballistic impact simulations
against 7.62 51AP ammunition were performed using ANSYS Explicit Dynamics and ACP modules. The effect of the air
gap on the ballistic protection performance of multi-layered armour system consists of Armox500T, Kevlar29epoxy and
Aluminum 6061T6 (AL6061T6) materials was investigated. The results of the analysis show that the energy absorbed by the
configuration without air gap is 4.378 kJ, while the configuration with air gap absorbs 5.897 kJ. In the same direction, it was
determined that the air-gapped structure reduced the projectile velocity 1.34 times more than the cavity-free combination.
