Özet
Resveratrol (3,5,4′-trihydroxystilbene, RSV) is a nonflavonoid polyphenolic phytoalexin characterized by a stilbene backbone. It is synthesized by plants in response to various environmental stressors, such as traumatic injury, ultraviolet radiation exposure, and fungal infections. Rich natural sources of RSV include the skins of red grapes, peanuts, blueberries, and red wine. Beyond its role in plant antimicrobial defense, RSV has attracted considerable attention for its antioxidant, antiinflammatory, antiproliferative, antitumor, cardioprotective, and neuroprotective properties. Because of its diverse biological effects, RSV has been extensively investigated as a promising compound for the prevention and treatment of several chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disorders, cancer, diabetes, and neurodegenerative conditions. The concept of the “French Paradox,” introduced in the 1990s, highlighted the surprisingly low incidence of cardiovascular disease among the French population despite a diet rich in saturated fats. This phenomenon was attributed to regular red wine consumption and, specifically, the presence of RSV. This observation significantly intensified scientific interest in the pharmacological properties of RSV. This chapter provides an in-depth overview of the biosynthesis, pharmacokinetic characteristics, biotransformation pathways, and cellular transport mechanisms of RSV. Particular focus is given to its molecular targets involved in regulating oxidative stress, inflammation, apoptosis, and cell cycle progression. Furthermore, challenges related to its low bioavailability and recent advancements in pharmaceutical formulation strategies designed to overcome this limitation are critically examined. In addition to exploring its therapeutic potential, this chapter also aims to highlight the multifaceted industrial applications of RSV in the fields of nutraceuticals and cosmeceuticals.
