Geli (Scorzonera L.) belongs Apiaceae family and an edible plant in South East region of
Türkiye. Simple coumarins are widely distributed and fulfil a general protective function while
pyranocoumarins belong to a rare sub-group of secondary metabolites synthesized in a limited
number of plant species of the Apiaceae and Rutacea. Pyranocoumarins have various
biological activities, but the most interesting and relevant today is anticancer activity. There
are no studies done for the roots of Geli species. The dried roots of Geli were collected from
the villages of Hakkari Province. The powdered roots were extracted with subcritical water (at
100,125,140 and 160°C and 60 and 80 atm). Pyhtochemical composition of the subcritical
water extracts was determined GC-MS analysis and the distribution of the components was
calculated from relative peak areas. Antioxidant analysis were carried out according to the
DPPH radical scavenging activity test. The subcritical water extracs (sbcWE-e) of roots are
found rich in pyrano coumarin, particularly decursin and isomer decursinol angelate and
pentacylic triterpenes (Figure 1). In addition, isostevol was obtained in the extracts of 125°C
and 140°C at both pressures (60 and 80 atm ). The highest relative amounts of coumarins was
observed in the extract of 100°C and 60 atm in yield (38,8%), while the lowest extraction yield
of coumarins was observed at 140°C and 80 atm. Increasing extraction temperature increased
the extraction yield of pentacyclic triterpenes while decreased the relative abundances of
coumarins. When the effect of phytochemical composition on the antioxidant activity was
examined, it could say that pyranocoumarins have a great effect on the antioxidant activitiy of
sbcWE-e of Geli root and when relative amount of pentacyclic triterpenes increased, the
antioxidant activity decreased
