Effects of augmented reality–based interventions in family-centered care on children and parents: A systematic review

Özet

Background and aim: Family-centered care (FCC) emphasizes collaboration between families and healthcare professionals. Augmented reality (AR) may support child engagement and caregiver participation, but evidence on its use within FCC has not been systematically synthesized. This review examined the characteristics and outcomes of AR-based FCC interventions. Methods: Six databases (ScienceDirect, PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, OVID, and TR Dizin) were searched for studies published up to April 18, 2025. Studies evaluating AR interventions within FCC and reporting child or parent outcomes were eligible. Two reviewers independently screened studies, extracted data, and appraised methodological quality using Joanna Briggs Institute tools. The review followed PRISMA 2020 guidelines and was registered in PROSPERO (CRD420261282668). Results: Eleven reports representing 10 distinct studies involving children and parents/caregivers across clinical and home settings were included. Interventions focused on family-involved education, emotion and behavior management, motor performance or executive functions, and sleep routines. AR interventions were acceptable and were associated with improved engagement, understanding of health-related procedures, routine adherence, and selected behavioral or functional outcomes. Evidence was limited by small sample sizes, methodological heterogeneity, and variability in outcomes and follow-up. Conclusion: AR-based interventions may strengthen family-centered pediatric care by facilitating shared engagement among children, caregivers, and healthcare professionals. However, current evidence remains preliminary and insufficient to support routine implementation; standardized outcomes and longer-term studies are needed. Implications to practice: AR-based interventions may support pediatric nursing practice by strengthening family engagement and child participation during education and care processes.
