Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the activity of MDA, SOD, GSH-Px, Total GSH and hormones (P4 and E2) in goats affected by normal birth and dystocia. In the study performed on a total of 20 goats, they were divided into two groups as normal birth group (Group I; n = 10) and dystocia group (Group II; n = 10). Blood samples were taken from the jugular vein within the first half hour (15-30 minutes) after birth. There was no significant difference between the groups in terms of MDA, GSH-Px, Total GSH levels (P> 0.05). Differences in both SOD concentration (P<0.01) and levels of P4 and E2 were significantly higher in goats affected by Dystocia (P<0.05). In conclusion, antioxidant (SOD) and hormonal (P4 and E2) activity changes during dystocia  and SOD can be used as a stress marker in goats affected by dystocia.

Key Words: Goat, Dystocia, Oxidative stress, Hormone.
