Özet

The research results on the individuals how perceive the identity and the sense of the environment were accepted as a distinctive for the development of the politics on the urban design. In this regard, in the study; with the experiment on Tarsus district presenting significant examples related with using the knowledge and experience on spatial during the historical process or getting off the point on different style of design and forming. 1) Besides the knowledge and experience, the determination of how to be perceived the seekings of current spatial by the experts and the users, the identification and scrutinising as mathematical, 2) It was aimed to transform the received findings to in-service as base on the urban design, and to develop of the principles and suggestions within this context as a systematic approach.

In the first step of the study, the spatial identity and visual perception specifications (perception value) of the items of the study area were introduced as mathematically in total and in detail. When the visual area was interpreted at this step which the experts are the significative, the principles of the Gestalt theory as proximity, similarity, closure and continuity were based. In the second step, the perception values in the same areas were designated by the research of the users. At this step, according to the method developed by Lynch (1960), five main items of the urban image as regions, roads, borders, focal points and landmarks were composed of the basis of the evaluation. At the third step, it was studied on the mapping of the perception values obtained from the researchs on the experts and the users.

The numerical findings and the urban design base which created of the products of the study will be able to set a model for further studies on similar issues and different urbans.
