Unexpected complication after varicella: Aplastic anemia

Özet

Varicella commonly called chickenpox is a self limited and also highly contagious childhood disease. Varicella has a mortality rate of <2 per 100 000 cases. The mortality rate of untreated primary infection in immunocompromised children is 7-14% and may approach 50% in adults. Hematologic complications are frequently known to occur after a viral infection in many cases. The hematologic complications include anemia, thrornbocytopenia, neutropenia, pancytopenia, and pure red cell aplasia. To the authors' knowledge no case of post-varicella aplastic anemia has been reported in the literature. The purpose of the present paper was to describe the case of a previously healthy 8-year-old girl who then developed aplastic anemia after varicella infection.
