Project Abstract

Renewable resources are thought to be the cleaner alternative for the energy demand; however, almost 80 per cent of energy demand in the world is still covered by fossil fuel (Figure 1), and it is expected that such consumption trend will continue for the following decades. In this regard, discoveries of new hydrocarbon resources solely depend on geological investigations. Hydrocarbons are also very important for emerging economies such as Turkey and Iran, for obtaining cheaper energy resources and keep up with economic growth.  In this regard, the main objective of this project is to develop new play types in eastern Turkey, and NW Iran where hydrocarbon production is minimal even though similar geological units produce oil and gas extensively in the Caspian Sea domain. We believe that the absence or scarcity of oil-producing fields in the study area is mainly due to the lack of adequate geological investigations in the region.  This study aims at providing new data and understanding to fill this major gap.
