EVALUATION OF CARDIAC FUNCTIONS IN MIDDLE AGE ELITE RUNNERS
Marathon, half-marathon and long distance running are one of the sports branches that athletes
have the highest level of physical capacity. Sudden cardiovascular complications can be
observed during or after exercise, especially in individuals who perform long-distance running
exercises over a certain age. The aim of the study is to examine some hematological
parameters and cardiac damage markers of individuals (over 35 years old) at individual race
pace on the treadmill, before, after, and within the following 24 hours.
Nineteen healthy male amateur runners, aged >35 years (mean age 47.42±1.68) were enrolled.
The athletes’ maximal aerobic capacities were determined and after that athletes performed
the running exercise for one hour at the individually determined pace. Venous blood samples
were obtained before the one-hour exercise, just after the exercise, fourth hour and twentyfourth
hour after the exercise. CK, CK-MB, Troponin-I, NT-proBNP and hemogram values
were determined.
We observed a rise in the levels of cardiac biomarkers after the one-hour exercise (p<0.05).
Although there were no pathological condition in the ECG recordings, signs of dehydration
were observed following exercise.
Long distance and high pace running exercise is an exercise model, in which physiological
limits are pushed, cardiovascular stress is increased and many blood parameters are elevated.
Although there are no signs of permanent or irreversible cardiac damage in our study, it is of
great importance for elderly individuals who perform this type of exercise, should repeat their
general health examinations intermittently.
