Proje Özeti

The GEMS project aims to generate practices and tools for the upskilling of adults digital literacy, resourcing an intergenerational approach. It will generate a bidirectional intergenerational learning supported by young adults who have already a good digital knowledge to teach digital contents to older adults (in a critical sense, in order to ensure a safe use of digital tools). Seniors will also teach young adults other skills, particularly soft skills (related to empathy, behavior but also history related, citizenship related, and alike).

The project target groups are adult learners, in particular those showing more difficulties with digital tools, devices and media (including social media). Emphasized by the pandemic the problems related to media unawareness emphasized social isolation, being the senior population majorly affect, because it is less proficient in digital tools and simultaneously more fragile to social isolation not being able to easily connect with other people through social media and digital tools in general.

The project’s name, GEMS, stands for a multidirectional strategy where people learn with each other making profit of the generations’ gap, but it also tells that:

- the knowledge of the senior population can be seen as a “gem” that can be used for their own upskilling, which will strengthen the learning outcomes. Humans are curious about subjects that address their own personalities and living contexts; therefore, their own experiences can be used to enhance their knowledge and competences;

- seniors should be seen as “gems” in the context of the global society in regard for their accumulated knowledge and experience, which can be passed through to different generations;

- young adults should be seen as “gems”, standing for the future, empowered with an ensemble of digital competencies which can be passed to other generations who are missing them;

- last, but not least, the project should be seen as a “gem” because it sets up the required environment to emphasize and extract the most important apprenticeship from the above mentioned “gems”.

The GEMS targeted audiences will be adults missing digital skills to properly face the new life contexts. Both seniors and youngsters will be take profit of the project’s outcomes and will be involved also as learning promoters for each other.

The objectives of the project are:

- to enhance the competence of adults on dealing with digital communication devices;

- to enhance an intergenerational relationship promoting cross-learning strategies for seniors and young adults;

- to support the competencies and adult education providers to deal with adults digital skills, enlarging their acting fields and strategies under such domain;
