Abstract:

 The water jet cutting method does not cause the formation of heat affected zone and any change in the mechanical and chemical properties of the material. It can be used at high temperatures and in explosive ambients. In addition, the water jet cutting system has advantages over the other types of cutting processes such as laser, plasma arc and electron beam etc. In Turkey, there is lack of experience and knowledge about high-pressure systems because of no study about such a system. This study mainly concerns the design and manufacturing of medium range pressure intensifier, which is a main part of the water-jet cutting system. At the first stage of the design, the initial dimensions of the intensifier are determined. After the selection of the control technique, the thermal and fluctuating pressure stresses in high and low-pressure cylinders are investigated to minimize the wall thicknesses of cylinders. The high pressure sealing techniques, which are the major problem of the design of high-pressure intensifier are also investigated. In this study, it is aimed to have a knowledge and experience to reach to the higher values of operating pressures in future studies.
